About the DepartmentThe Data Management and Business Intelligence function ensures timely and effective decision-making across the Authority through effective data and records management, and business intelligence reporting, to support risk-based supervision. The function is responsible for driving data governance, data quality management and integrity, as well as data architecture. They also manage a centralised data warehouse and BI analytics platform to provide ongoing insights, analyses and operational dashboards for end users. This role forms part of the Data Innovation & Strategy team within the Data Management and Business Intelligence function. The team are at the forefront of shaping how the Authority leverages data and AI to lead in a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape. They are on a mission to unlock data’s full potential, not just to inform decisions, but to transform the way the Authority supervises, anticipates emerging risks, and delivers public value. The Data Innovation & Strategy team drives forward-looking initiatives, explores cutting-edge technologies, and plays a key role in positioning the MFSA as a digitally empowered, innovation-driven regulator.About the RoleThe Assistant Data Innovation Engineering Manager will play a central role in shaping how the MFSA leverages advanced data analytics, machine learning (ML), and large language models (LLMs) to enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of its core regulatory functions. This is a forward-looking, hands-on role ideal for a technically skilled and ambitious individual who is ready to contribute to transformative projects. The selected candidate will also work across teams to prototype and develop solutions that embed AI capabilities into the Authority’s most critical supervisory, enforcement, and operational processes.Key Responsibilities include:
  • Identifying opportunities where AI, ML, and LLMs can significantly enhance MFSA’s regulatory and operational capabilities;
  • Supporting the definition and prioritisation of AI use cases, feeding into the Authority’s long-term AI roadmap and capability model;
  • Building, testing, and refining prototypes that demonstrate the value and feasibility of AI-enabled improvements to MFSA’s processes;
  • Ensuring that solutions are designed not just for automation and efficiency, but also to deliver greater analytical depth and decision-making support;
  • Helping map out MFSA’s data tools, platforms, and practices to identify what’s working, what’s missing, and where ML/LLM technologies can help;
  • Engaging with colleagues from Business Units, Programme Management, IT, and Data to align efforts and ensure successful implementation;
  • Tracking developments in the use of AI/ML/LLMs within global and European financial regulatory frameworks;
  • Collaborating with the Data Governance team to shape the Authority’s future data architecture and governance model, ensuring readiness for AI-driven innovation;
  • Managing the day-to-day activities of the assigned team or project, providing guidance, reviewing outputs, and supporting staff development initiatives;
  • Undertake any other duties as assigned by the Head and/or as may be required by the MFSA from time to time based on the exigencies of the Authority.
About youWe are looking for candidates with solid academic background in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or in another related background. The role calls for an academic qualification in a relevant field of study at National Qualification Framework Level 6 or better, duly certified by the Malta Qualifications Recognition Information Centre (MQRIC) or a widely recognised professional qualification at a comparable level.You will also possess a minimum of six (6) years prior experience in a similar or related domain.If you do not have the necessary academic or professional qualifications but you have at least eleven (11) years of relevant experience. we would still be interested in speaking with you.As an Assistant Data Innovation Engineering Manager you should demonstrate:
  • Strong ability to prioritise tasks and approach work in a structured, organized manner;
  • Excellent communication skills, with confidence engaging and collaborating with teams at all levels;
  • A curious and analytical mindset, consistently seeking opportunities to improve processes and outcomes;
  • Resilience and adaptability in a rapidly evolving environment;
  • Practical experience applying machine learning and/or large language models (LLMs) to real-world problems;
  • Familiarity with relevant tools and frameworks such as Python, scikit-learn, Hugging Face, TensorFlow, PyTorch, or similar technologies;
  • Experience in the financial sector is an advantage.
