Join our dynamic team that values collaboration, continuous learning, and personal growth.Job SummaryThe Catheterization Lab Nurse is responsible for providing safe, high-quality nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic and interventional cardiac and vascular procedures in the Catheterization Laboratory.The nurse assists cardiologists and the multidisciplinary team before, during, and after procedures, ensuring patient safety, accurate monitoring, sterile technique, and compliance with hospital policies and clinical standards.Responsibilities:Pre-Procedure Responsibilities
  • Prepare patients for cardiac catheterization and interventional procedures.
  • Verify patient identity, consent, and procedure details.
  • Assess patient condition, allergies, medical history, and medications.
  • Prepare and check equipment, consumables, and medications.
  • Ensure proper sterile field preparation and infection control measures.
Intra-Procedure Responsibilities
  • Assist cardiologists during procedures such as:
  • Coronary angiography
  • Percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)
  • Pacemaker implantation
  • Angiograms and vascular procedures
  • Monitor patient vital signs, ECG, oxygen saturation, and hemodynamic status.
  • Administer medications as prescribed (e.g., anticoagulants, sedation).
  • Maintain sterile technique at all times.
  • Act as scrub nurse or circulating nurse as required.
  • Respond to emergencies (e.g., arrhythmias, cardiac arrest, contrast reactions).
Post-Procedure Responsibilities
  • Monitor patients in recovery for complications (bleeding, arrhythmias, vital signs instability).
  • Assess vascular access sites (radial/femoral).
  • Provide post-procedure patient care and education.
  • Document procedures, medications, and patient observations accurately.
  • Ensure safe patient transfer to ward or discharge area.
  • Operate and check Cath Lab equipment and monitoring systems.
  • Ensure radiation safety protocols are followed.
  • Maintain stock and ensure availability of emergency equipment.
  • Participate in equipment checks and quality control procedures.
  • Follow hospital infection control, patient safety, and clinical governance policies.
  • Participate in training, and continuous professional development.
  • Assist with maintaining Cath Lab standards and protocols.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse with the Council for Nurses and Midwives Malta.
  • Minimum 2–3 years nursing experience (critical care, cardiology, emergency, or Cath Lab preferred).
  • Experience in cardiac monitoring and acute patient care is highly desirable.
Skills & Competencies
  • Knowledge of cardiac procedures and hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Ability to work in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment.
  • Strong clinical assessment and emergency response skills.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Knowledge of infection control and sterile techniques.
  • Understanding of radiation safety.
  • Good documentation and organizational skills.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Experience in Catheterization Lab nursing.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Training in conscious sedation.
  • Training in hemodynamic monitoring.
